Brooks leaves UWSP for Division 1 Michigan Tech

Chris Brooks, who guided
the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) men’s hockey team to the 2016
NCAA Division III National Title, announced he was stepping down as the
Pointers’ head coach Monday, June 26, to become an assistant coach for the NCAA
Division I Michigan Tech University men’s hockey team.
During six seasons at
UWSP, Brooks led the Pointers to three consecutive National Championship Game
appearances from 2014 to 2016, and its fourth straight trip to the NCAA
Division III Tournament this season.
The 2016 USCHO Division
III National Coach of the Year, Brooks joins a Michigan Tech program that has
won three NCAA Division 1 National Titles, while UWSP will immediately begin a national
search for its next men’s hockey head coach.
“It was a great
experience,” said Brooks of UWSP. “Before I got hired here, I never knew
anything about Division III college hockey.
“And just to see the
growth of our program and see the culture of our program change in such a short
period of time,” he said, “and to be able to see the success that we had and
surround myself with good people assistant coach-wise, player-wise and
community-wise, it was just an awesome experience that really benefited my
growth as a person and my growth as a coach.”
