UPDATE: Driver Attempted to Traverse Railroad Gates
By Brandi Makuski
Police say the driver of a semi-truck attempted to drive around traffic control gates before being struck by a CN train on Saturday.
Felix Eric Lagare, 60, had just unloaded his truck at the Stevens Point location of Verso and was headed back to Wisconsin Rapids when he was stopped by traffic control arms at the train tracks on Prarie Street.
The driver attempted to drive around the arms, according to Sgt. Bob Kussow. The accident was reported to 911 at 11:12 PM.
“He was cited for driving through/around a railroad crossing gate,” Kussow said. “And he also struck a building next to Dave’s Body Shop.”
According to Assistant Police Chief Tom Zenner, Lagare was operating a Cardinal semi-truck northbound near Wood and Prairie streets when it was struck by a train on the Canadian National railroad tracks.
According to Zenner, the train was backing up when it “made impact” with the truck, crushing the driver’s cab.
Lagare was transported by ambulance to Ministry St. Michael’s with minor injuries. Kussow said he has since been released.
The accident caused a power outage affecting about 3,300 customers. Wis. Public Service was on the scene and had power restored in a few hours.
Stevens Point Fire/EMS also responded to the scene.
