City will buy 64 acres on east side

By Gene Kemmeter
The Stevens Point Common Council approved the purchase of approximately 64 acres of land adjacent to the city on the east side north of Highway 10 in the town of Hull Monday, Aug. 7.
The council voted 7-4 in favor of the purchase for $595,000, down from the previously reported price of $620,000 after a soil test by Nummelin Testing Services in Stevens Point indicated the property had high groundwater, which would limit some development of the property.
Voting for the purchase were alderpersons David Shorr, District 2; Cindy Nebel, District 3; Heidi Oberstadt, District 4; Meleesa Johnson, District 5; Jeremy Slowinski, District 6; Mike Phillips, District 10; and Shaun Morrow, District 11.
Opposed were Tori Jennings, District 1; Mary Kneebone, District 7; Cathy Dugan, District 8; and Mary McComb, District 9.
Many of the alderpersons admitted the issue of buying the property was a tough decision, listing pros and cons.
