One man remains in critical condition and a second has been released from the hospital following a two-vehicle accident involving barn beams that shut down one lane of Highway 10 near County Road G for about two hours Saturday, Aug. 5.

David Heup, 56, Shawano, is in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Marshfield Medical Center, formerly St. Joseph’s Hospital, early this week after he was airlifted from a baseball diamond in Junction City following the accident.

David Smith, 40, Schofield, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and was released the same day.

A Marshfield Medical Center spokesman declined to release details of the men’s injuries due to privacy.

The accident occurred at about 2:10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, along Highway 10 near County Road G in the town of Carson. Heup had been driving a minivan west on Highway 10 when he struck a barn beam that had fallen from a pickup truck and trailer driven westbound on Highway 10 by William Porter, 75, Vesper. Porter had not secured the beams down properly, and several came loose and fell on the highway.
