Letter: Councilwoman’s Online Comments ‘Appalling’

To the Editor-

I am from Plainfield, but I work in Stevens Point and attend the local technical college. I grew up in the Stevens Point area and have lived local my whole life.

I love Stevens Point, which is why I choose to further my education in Stevens Point, and made the choice to work there. I have many friends and family who reside in Stevens Point. My family and I shop and give to the community as if we lived there.

I follow the local news regularly and was astonished at the article in regards to the council’s complaints of the noise ordinance. For starters, I am a mother; I have school-aged children who will be involved in sports, etc.

I was baffled by the arguments in the media. I made a comment of my personal opinion, which was followed up with a comment from a “Mary Rose Mc”. After further investigation of her Facebook profile, I realized she was Mary McComb, the alder of District 9 for the City of Stevens Point.

I took her comment to myself and many others as a threat to our careers and professions. I was appalled by the behavior of a city representative. It was unprofessional and made me feel as if she has tyrant/dictator opinions.

I am an American citizen, with Constitutional rights to freedom of speech, just as she had the right to make her complaint of the noise. “Mary rose Mc’s” comments made me very concerned for the well-being of our community, knowing we have people with these types of tendencies being in charge of decisions for the well being of the community.

I am an American citizen. Last time I checked this was a democracy. This isn’t a country of dictatorship.

It concerns me to have my livelihood threatened over my opinion of the pettiest council meeting concern I have ever read about in local news.

It’s summertime. These people are just being people. Taking care of their yards should be respected not frowned upon. A little child’s birthday is a happy time. A person complaining about children playing sports, and having a birthday party is truly, truly disgusting — just as disgusting as her behavior as a government representative.

I want to see Stevens Point become greater. It shouldn’t be a modern day “Footloose”.

Ashley Jaramillo

Editor’s Note: For clarity, the Aug. 14 meeting this letter references was not a City Council meeting; it was a standing committee meeting, which is comprised of City Council members.
