City reviews options to move offices
By Gene Kemmeter
The Stevens Point Finance Committee discussed possible options involving a move by the Police Department to the former Mid-State Technical College (MSTC) facility at 933 Michigan Ave. Monday, Aug. 14, but delayed action until next week because a contract for architectural study services hasn’t been completed.
Committee members said they will hold an executive session to meet behind closed doors to discuss the financial ramifications of the various options before moving forward by hiring an architect to update specific costs.
Mike Ostrowski, city development director, presented the various options and said the next step would be to pick an option to proceed with and get an architect to provide an update on costs.
“We are in for pretty significant capital expenses no matter where we go,” said city Comptroller-Treasurer Corey Ladick. “We are in better capital shape with our new (capital improvement) plan than we were in a few years ago.”
Ostrowski presented five options for moving the Police Department to MSTC, including for the City Hall remaining in the County-City Building. The Police Department is in overcrowded quarters in the County-City Building, and City Hall offices also need space in the building, which has limited expansion possibilities.
