Two of the top teams in the state will square off this week, when Division 5 top-ranked Amherst travels to play Division 6 top-ranked Fond du Lac St. Mary’s Springs, to highlight Week 2 of the High School football season.

Pacelli Catholic High School will look to win for the second week in a row when it hosts La Crosse Aquinas at Community Stadium at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, while Rosholt will host Shiocton, Almond-Bancroft is set to play at Rio, and Stevens Point Area Senior High School (SPASH) will hit the road to face ninth-ranked Hudson.

For the third year in a row, back-to-back defending WIAA Division 5 State Champion Amherst (1-0) will take on Fond du Lac Springs (1-0) in a nonconference battle, as the two top-ranked teams are set to meet in Fond du Lac at 7 p.m. Friday.

“It’s a good measuring stick for both teams, to see where we are this early in the season,” said Amherst football head coach Mark Lusic. “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, it’s not the State Championship, but it’s fun and it brings a lot more excitement.

“I’m sure we’ll be Game of the Week somewhere, and I’m sure people will be following it,” he said. “It’s exciting for the kids and for both communities, to play in this kind of high-level game.”
