Stanley Wesley Szczytko, 68, of Marshfield, a former University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) professor, died Wednesday afternoon, August 30, 2017, in a sailing accident on Lake Superior in Bayfield, Wisconsin.

Stanley was born August 7, 1949, in Neptune, New Jersey. He retired from UWSP in 2013 with the title Professor of Water Resources, and was subsequently granted emeritus status. Stanley taught in the College of Natural Resources (CNR) from August 1979 through December 2012.

In 1984, he was named the college intern program coordinator and served in that capacity until his retirement. He was named the UWSP Water Resources Coordinator in 1989 serving hundreds of CNR student interns. -He cared greatly about the future of the College of Natural Resources and UWSP students.

In tandem with his professorial responsibilities, Stan was an active and prolific scholar. During his tenure, he published 45 major scientific papers and authored three books. In June of 2015, he was awarded the LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD by the International Society for Plecoptera and Ephemeroptera at their international meeting in Scotland. The society cited Professor Szczytko for his exemplary contributions over four decades as a field Plecopterologists.

Stan was a longtime member of Port Superior Marina in Bayfield, Wisconsin; sailing often with friends and family on the great Lake Superior. Recently, he made Port Superior Marina his summer home, following daily routines of coffee in the morning with staff, and ending his day with dinner at Portside Restaurant or with friends in the Clubhouse. He shared friendly words with everyone he met on the boardwalk and in the parking lot.

During the winter months, Stan lived in Cave Creek, Arizona and enjoyed daily hikes and golf games with close friends.

Stanley adored his mother and children, and found joy in spending time with his grandchildren and visiting with his sister and her family.

He is survived by his mother, Martha Wright Szczytko of Jackson, New Jersey; his two children, Jennifer C. Szczytko of Appleton, Wisconsin and Aaron and wife Donna Szczytko of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina; one sister, Dorothy Martin and husband, Arthur, Jackson of New Jersey; two grandchildren, T. Jackson and Sabrina Janda of Appleton, Wisconsin; and three step-grandsons, Landon, Lleyton and Lane Spivey of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina; niece, Sharon Killeen; nephew, Jeffrey Martin; and several cousins.

His father, Edmund Szczytko, precedes him in death.

A Memorial Service will be held at 5 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017, at the Sentry World Grand Ballroom with Rev. Marilyn Lange presiding. A time of visitation and sharing of memories will precede the service from 3 to 5 p.m. A reception and continuation of Life Celebration will follow in the Grand Ballroom.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts of memory be made in Professor Szczytko’s name made payable to UWSP Foundation-Szczytko Scholarship Fund and mailed to UWSP Foundation, 2100 Main Street, Stevens Point, WI 54481; or online at https://give.uwsp.edu/give-now, designated “Other Specific Fund”:  Stan Szczytko Memorial Scholarship.
