French fries a death sentence? Not so fast

By Jim Schuh – Special to the Gazette
I was astounded to read an article from Healthy Living in an AARP email headlined “Your Fries May Be Deadly.”
AARP should be ashamed of posting the article. It’s plain that after reading it we should be skeptical of things even if they come from “reliable” sources.
Around these parts, potato growers are a decent lot and help our economy. They grow a good product. Their product doesn’t deserve being singled out for criticism resulting from questionable research.
The AARP newsletter article claims “a new study has discovered a link between frequent eating of French fries and an increased risk of premature death.” But a few paragraphs later, the article quotes a nutritionist who questions the claim. That makes one wonder why AARP ever published the article, using the misleading headline.
