Nighthawks’ migration carry August into September

By Ken M. Blomberg – Special to the Gazette
Have you ever witnessed an invasion of goatsuckers? True to form, the August promise of migrating nighthawks has begun. The sight and sounds of these diligent hunters as they pass by in the blink of the eye, is worth the wait for the beginning of fall and the month of September.
That was the case earlier this week, as the first wave of nighthawks swooped, twisted and turned over our property on their way south.
“This week,” according to the DNR, “saw the first flights of common nighthawks statewide. Look for these aerial insectivores darting across the evening sky over the next two weeks as they head for wintering areas in South America.”
