Pacelli Returns to Form Against W-F
By Jacob Mathias
The Pacelli Cardinals varsity football team showed up to play Friday night as they defeated the Weyauwega-Fremont Indians 41-14.
After a tight 22-20 loss against the Wittenberg-Birnamwood Chargers last week, Pacelli’s victory over the Indians is in keeping with the rest of their season. Their record now stands at 4-1 overall and 2-1 in Central Wisconsin Conference play.
Pacelli shut out the Indians for most of the game, scoring 41 unanswered points until the fourth quarter.
Senior Daniel Mitch scored first with a 27-yard touchdown run and an extra point bringing the Cardinals to an early 7-0 lead. Mitch would later score the Cardinals’ final TD with a 25-yard run in the third quarter.
Junior running back Richard Zupan tallied three TDs, two on passes from junior quarterback Zach Zimmerman and a third on a 40-yard punt return. Zimmerman also connected with senior wide receiver Hayden Jurgella for a 65-yard TD pass.
Zimmerman led the Cardinals offense with 144 passing yards followed up by Mitch who rushed for 106 yards.
On defense, junior defensive back Ben Lundgren led with seven tackles, two of which resulted in lost yardage for the Indians. Junior DB Nate Helms followed not far behind with six tackles on the night.
The Cardinals return to Goerke Field on Friday, Sept. 22 as they take on the Iola-Scandinavia (4-1) Thunderbirds at 7 PM.
