Local Restaurant Hosts UWSP Faculty Appreciation Night
By Jacob Mathias
A local restaurant is showing appreciation for university faculty and staff.
Thursday nights at the Watchman’s Gone restaurant, owned by Andy and Samantha Pech in the location of the former Al’s Diner, will now be UW-Stevens Point faculty and staff appreciation night. The restaurant will offer specialty hors d’oeuvres and drink specials from 4 to 9 PM.
Andy Pech said he wanted to show the UWSP faculty and staff that they were appreciated while going through stressful challenges such as budget and department cuts at the university due to declining enrollment. It was recently announced the university’s geology and geography departments will be eliminated.
“I’m thinking about the hard times they’re going through and the stress,” said Pech. “And reiterating that a lot of people know how important they are to the university and how important the university is to Stevens Point.”
Andy Pech has a long history as a Pointer. He and his grandmother, aunts, uncles and siblings all attended the university. He is also a former UWSP staffer having worked at the University Library.
“It’s one of the few institutions you can go where you actually know your professors personally,” said Pech. “It’s always been the calling card of UWSP that the faculty and staff really are going to make sure the students do well.”
Samantha Pech continues to work in the UWSP Continuing Education office.
The Watchman will serve a vegetarian pizza, a specialty taco platter and another yet to be determined hors d’oeuvre at their first appreciation night. Wisconsin beers will also be specially priced at $2.50. The menu will change every week.
The Watchman’s Gone serves traditional and unique diner sandwiches, soups and salads.
The restaurant is located at 3324 Jefferson St. and is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 9 PM and Sunday from 9 AM to 1 PM.
