Robert R. Williams

Robert Rama “Bob” Williams, 92, Stevens Point, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2017.
Mr. Williams was born to the late Ralph Rama Williams and Jeannette Gibson Sept. 5, 1925, in Oshkosh. They soon moved to Neenah, where they lived with his grandmother. He grew up in Neenah participating in track, debate, golf (caddying) and the First Presbyterian Church. He graduated in 1943 and enrolled at University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison). He joined a Navy program, which sent his unit to Oberlin College, Ohio, for further education.
After his Navy shipboard experience in 1945, he worked in Maine and then returned to UW-Madison.
He worked for the Department of Agriculture after graduation in 1949, and then became an editor at Gas Magazine.
He accepted a job in public relations at the Kohler Company, Kohler, in 1951, and then moved to work in employee relations with Hardware Mutual (now Sentry Insurance) in late 1952.
He and Mary Markham were married in Janesville in April 1950. They and daughter, Jennifer, became Stevens Point residents in 1953.
In 1954, he contracted polio. His right arm was permanently paralyzed by the disease. However, he formed his own public relations firm, Idea Associates, in 1958. In 1977, he took on a partner, Charles Nason.
In addition to his work, he enjoyed planning trips and photography, and he enjoyed visiting Door County. He also participated in many political campaigns, as well as assisting with the original Laird Youth Leadership campaign at UW-Stevens Point (UWSP).
Throughout his career, he received many awards, including the Distinguished Service Award from the School of Journalism, UW-Madison; the Quality of Life Leadership Award from St. Michael’s Foundation; the Letters and Science Community Award, UWSP; and the Significant Achievement Award from UWSP.
The Rotary Club of Stevens Point also honored him for his educational efforts on behalf of post polio syndrome research and awareness.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Markham Williams, Stevens Point; four children, Jennifer (Crow), Markham (Merle), Sarah (Bersh) and Faith; four grandchildren, Abby (Colin), Cottage Grove, Eli, Madrid, Spain, Frances, Madison, and Gabriel, Hanover Park, Ill.; one great-grandchild, Lucy Belle Green; and a cousin.
He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Kelly Katherine Williams.
Visitation was Sunday, Oct. 1, 2017, at the Shuda Funeral Chapel – Stevens Point.
A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 20, at Frame Presbyterian Church. Memorial gifts may be made to UWSP for scholarships, to UW-Madison for journalism students or to Frame Presbyterian Church.
