Land purchase for new City Hall delayed

By Cassie Lennox
A request from the City of Stevens Point to purchase three properties for a future City Hall building in downtown Stevens Point was postponed until next month.
The Stevens Point City Plan Commission voted 4-3 Monday, Oct. 2, to postpone a recommendation to buy downtown properties to construct a new City Hall. Commissioners will revisit the issue Nov. 6.
Residents and alders attending the meeting questioned whether building new was the best option.
“I have concerns with the route this decision is taking,” said Mary McComb, District 9 alder. “I’m wanting better, full information, and encourage the Plan Commission not to recommend this for now, until more discussion can be had.”
Some alders in attendance went so far as to suggest renovating the existing space within the County-City Building, located near downtown.
Portage County currently is working with an architect on designs for renovating and redesigning the interior layout of the County-City Building. The architect has included options that create enough space that city offices could remain in the building.
