UWSP volleyball team to host Attacking Alzheimer’s Fundraiser

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) women’s volleyball team will host its fourth annual Attacking Alzheimer’s night during the team’s Senior Night and Homecoming Game versus UW-Eau Claire at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14.

The event will include T-shirt and hat sales, a 50/50 raffle, and the opportunity to make donations. All proceeds will go towards the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Wisconsin Chapter, which helps the Association to provide critical care and support services for the 110,000 people in Wisconsin living with Alzheimer’s and their 193,000 family caregivers. The funds also enable the Alzheimer’s Association’s public policy efforts and advance critical research towards finding a cure.

Attacking Alzheimer’s is held in honor of UWSP volleyball head coach Abbey Sutherland’s mother, Rhonda Sutherland, who was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s in 2013.

Of the disease and event, coach Sutherland’s father, Rob Sutherland, says “We must get a handle on this awful disease for our own sake and for our children.”

Last year’s event raised nearly $6,000—comprising almost two-thirds of the $9,619 raised by the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women’s volleyball teams for selected causes.

This year’s goal is to surpass $6,000 in funds raised.
