Gloria M. Smith, 85, Stevens Point, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2017, at North Haven Assisted Living.

She was born Jan. 5, 1932, in Milwaukee. She was raised in Eau Claire by her mother, Dorothy, and Bert Bell, with the assistance of her grandparents, James and Sylvia Burgess. She attended Eau Claire High School.

She was married to Harold Smith Oct. 30, 1954, in Eau Claire. The couple moved to Stevens Point in 1956. She initially kept busy raising her family and working part-time at various businesses including the Pink Cafe, J.C. Penney and Ben Franklin.

She started working full-time for University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) in the University Center in the late 1960s. She held various positions there over the years, including her last position as catering supervisor.

After “retiring,” she continued to work there part-time. She enjoyed working with college students and was a perfectionist in preparing each function to be the best.

She loved camping with her grandchildren, she enjoyed traveling, bowling, playing cards, reading murder mystery novels, and listening to all varieties of music, especially Elvis. She was also an avid fan of the theatre, and was a subscriber to UWSP’s First Nighters Series for over 20 years.

She is survived by her four children, Michael (Claudia) Smith, Plover, Rebecca Zortman, Los Angeles, Calif., Debra Smith, Stevens Point, and Pamela Smith, Prescott, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Stephanie Smith, Los Angeles, Calif., Reannon (Andy) Lochner, Madison, Kristen (Alex) Sutherland, Las Vegas, Nev., Matthew Zortman, Stevens Point, and Michelle (Brendt) Christensen, Champaign, Ill.; two great-grandchildren, Samantha Isherwood and Owen Sutherland; and two sisters: Judy Scheuermann, Eau Claire, and Carol Blum, Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, in 2013.

A private burial will be held at Guardian Angel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in her name for the Alzheimer’s Association. Online condolences may be offered at www.shudafuneral.com.
