The top-ranked Amherst High School football team used a flurry late in the first half and early in the second half to beat fifth-ranked Spencer/Marshfield Columbus Catholic in a WIAA Division 5 Level 2 Playoff Game at Amherst Friday, Oct. 27.

Amherst High School senior running back Bryce Holderman (35) finds daylight down the sideline to pick up 31 yards on a fake punt in the second quarter of the top-ranked Falcons’ 49-18 win over fifth-ranked Spencer/Marshfield Columbus Friday, Oct. 27.

The second-seeded Falcons (10-1) led 8-6 over third-seeded Spencer/Columbus (9-2) midway through the second quarter, before they used a 28-0 run over a span of five minutes to build a 36-6 lead, on the way to a 49-18 victory.

Back-to-back defending State Champion Amherst will host fifth-seeded Stratford (8-2) in a Division 5 Level 3 game at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, with the winner to move on to the State Semifinals.

“This is a great feeling,” said senior offensive guard/linebacker Max Villnow. “And Stratford won, so we get to play one more game at home.”

“It was definitely a team effort, on offense and defense,” said senior quarterback/safety Marcus Glodowski. “Our guys up front did it on offense, they were working every play.

“And the guys on defense were insane tonight,” he said.

Amherst High School senior quarterback Marcus Glodowski breaks into the open field for a 65-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage in the second half of the top-ranked Falcons’ 49-18 win over fifth-ranked Spencer/Marshfield Columbus Catholic in a Division 5 Level 2 Playoff Game at Amherst Friday, Oct. 27.
