A variety of programs and events will take place to celebrate Veterans Day over several days, beginning Friday, Nov. 10, in area schools. Events include:

– Amherst Elementary School students and staff will present a programfor Veterans Day at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, to honor and salute area veterans. The program will take place in the high schoolgym. Students will sing songs they have learned in music class and audience members will also be asked to sing some patriotic songs.

Veterans from the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King will be special guests at the program. Students are encouraged to wear red, white and blue clothing on that day.

Veterans who plan to attend the program are encouraged to call Lynn Seifert at 715-824-5523 ext. 434 or Aralda Bell at home 715-258-0237 to leave a message including name and branch of service. There will be special seating for veterans and their families.

– St. Paul Lutheran School planned to hold a Veterans Day Chapel Service at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at St. Paul Lutheran Church to honor those who have served in the armed forces. Students will be presenting songs, skits and stories to say “Thank You,” and will hold a brunch with the fifth-grade class, who is hosting the service.

– Plover Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10262 and Plover American Legion Post 543 will conduct joint ceremonies in observance of Veterans Day on Saturday, Nov. 11, to honor all servicemen and servicewomen who have fought for or are fighting for this county.

Ceremonies at the Korean War Memorial will begin at 10:30 a.m. and include VFW and Legion Color Guards march to the Isle of Man; Welcome and Veterans Day Message by Plover Village Administrator Dan Mahoney; VFW Firing Squad and Taps; March from the Isle of Man.

Veterans Day marks the anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War I, which formally took place at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.

– University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) will hold several Veterans Day events. Student veterans will share their experiences as part of several free, public events at the UWSP in a Veterans Day ceremony, “My Life as a Student…My Life as a Soldier,” which will be held noon to 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, in the Alumni Room of the Dreyfus University Center. Former Marine sergeant Tegan Griffith, a communications and public relations major, is a keynote speaker. UWSP Chancellor Bernie Patterson, a U.S. Army veteran, will give a welcome address.

In addition, a panel of four UWSP student veterans and Patterson will offer a question and answer session. Capt. Nathan Wallin, a UWSP graduate student, teaching assistant and member of the Minnesota Air National Guard, will moderate the panel. The ROTC Color Guard will present the colors, and the UWSP Pep Band will perform.

Griffith served as an aircraft maintenance administration specialist in the Marine Corps. At UWSP, she is public relations director for the Student Government Association and an active member of the UWSP Veterans Club. She plans to graduate in May 2018.

She has been active in veterans’ causes, including working for the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs and as an active leader in Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. She is a member of the Women Marines Association, Disabled American Veterans, Plover VFW, Wittenberg American Legion, Student Veterans of America and VFW of Wisconsin Legislative Committee.

– At 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, the UWSP Veterans Club and Boots on the Ground Theater will present “See Me For Who I Am: A Theatrical Event” in the Dreyfus University Center Laird Room. Based on the book “See Me For Who I Am,” a collection of essays written by UWSP student veterans, the event features professional actors and student veterans portraying the harsh realities of war and the void between military and civilian life.

– At 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Laird Room, Marine Corps veteran Thomas Brennan will talk about his book, “Shooting Ghosts,” a memoir he co-authored with photographer Finbarr O’Reilly. A recipient of the Purple Heart, Brennan served in Afghanistan and Iraq. He is a regular contributor to The New York Times “At War” blog and is founder of “The War Horse,” an award-winning nonprofit newsroom chronicling the effects of post 9/11 conflict. The book will be available for purchase.
