UWSP men’s basketball looks to return to WIAC Title hunt
By John Kemmeter
With a veteran core back, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) men’s basketball team will look to contend for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Title and a NCAA Division III Tournament berth this season.
After winning the 2015 Division III National Title, the Pointers missed the National Tournament last season for the second year in a row, and finished 14-10 overall.
UWSP opened the 2017-18 season at home against St. Olaf (Minn.) Wednesday, Nov. 15, and will be on the road at Buena Vista (Iowa) at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, and at St. Norbert Nov. Saturday, Nov. 25.
“There’s something different about these guys, and there has been since last spring,” said UWSP men’s basketball head coach Bob Semling. “Throughout the summer, the guys have really, they’ve prepared hard, they know the significance of this year and what it means to them and to our fans.
“And clearly since we’ve started now in October with practices, there is more confidence, there is a little bit more of a veteran feel, and a little more of a swagger and a confidence that can’t be shaken,” he said. “So, everybody’s thrilled and excited to get this season underway.”
