Clarence L. Wanta, 93, formerly of Stevens Point, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2017, in Henderson Nevada.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017, at Holy Spirit Parish. Rev. Thomas Lindner will officiate. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. until the time of services at the church. The Knights of Columbus will lead a rosary at 9 a.m. at Holy Spirit. Burial with full military honors will be at the Guardian Angel Cemetery after the Mass.

He was born Nov. 3, 1924, in Rosholt, to the late Joseph and Johanna (Plata) Wanta. He was the sixth of 11 children. He attended P. J. Jacobs High School.

After high school, he worked at Whiting-Plover Country Club as a groundskeeper and the following year he managed the club’s retail shop.

In 1945, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Force and was honorably discharged in October 1947 from Fitzsimons General Hospital in Denver, Colo.

He was married to Rosella M. Zurawski Sept. 10, 1951, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church.

In 1952, he was hospitalized at the V.A. hospital in Madison. Upon completion, he worked for the Erickson Oil Co. as a bookkeeper.

In 1960, he and his wife purchased Coopers Corner Bar and operated it until 1973. They owned their own stock car and enjoyed participating in the races.

In 1978, the family moved to Arizona for health reasons. Later, they moved to Nevada where the couple enjoyed watching NASCAR racing and Packers football, with occasional visits to the casinos and going out to dinner.

He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, Knights of Columbus – 4th Degree, Elks Club and American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Rose; two daughters, Celeste Wanta and Shelley Wanta (Jim Geary); and one grandson, Colin Filtz.

He was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters.
