SPASH Girls Top Marshfield

STEVENS POINT — The SPASH girls basketball team pulled out a big early season conference win over visiting Marshfield at the SPASH fieldhouse Tuesday night.
The Panthers improve their Wisconsin Valley Conference record to 2-0 with the 62-47 win, 8-0 overall. Marshfield opens its conference season with a 0-1 record, 1-3 overall.
Shaking off a bit of a slow start the Panthers broke the game open jumping out to a 14-9 lead midway through the first period. SPASH built that margin to take a 29-16 lead into the halftime break.
Shooting woes and turnovers were the story for Marshfield in the first half and pressure from a stout zone defense led to the Tigers demise in the closing stanza.
“We were able to pull off a big victory despite having a slow start,” said senior Halle Gregorich. “We picked up our defensive pressure and began moving the ball more in the second half.”
Maggie Negaard led all scorers lighting up the board with 14 points. Negaard dished out four assists on the night. Rachel Sullivan added 13 points including two 3-pointers.
The Panthers will host DeForest at the SPASH fieldhouse Tuesday, December 19. Opening tip is scheduled for 7:15 pm.
