UWSP to face top-ranked Whitman on Vegas trip
By John Kemmeter
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) men’s basketball team will continue a stretch of four games in a row against teams ranked in the Top 13 in the country, when it plays in Las Vegas next week.
The Pointers (5-2) recorded a pair of wins at home last week over Lawrence and St. Thomas (Minn.), and were set to close out this week with a game at Edgewood in Madison Thursday, Dec. 21, before a showdown with third-ranked Augustana (Ill.) in Wisconsin Dells Friday, Dec. 22.
After Christmas, UWSP will head to Vegas for the D3hoops.com Classic, where the Pointers will take on 13th-ranked Wartburg (Iowa) (8-1) at 8 p.m. Central Thursday, Dec. 28, and then play top-ranked Whitman (Wash.) (7-0) at 8 p.m. Central Friday, Dec. 29.
“It’s a great opportunity and it’s a steep challenge,” said UWSP men’s basketball head coach Bob Semling. “Wartburg presents a completely different style and all kinds of challenges on their own, and then 24 hours later we play a completely different program, almost 180-degrees different style-wise, in how fast they will play and how aggressively they will pick up and trap and try to score out of their defense.
“But that’s exactly what you want to challenge your team with,” he said. “The ability to compete against all different types of programs and styles and philosophies, and to be able to do that in a quick turnaround.”
