BUENA VISTA — An early morning accident was the cause of downed power lines across State Highway 54 this morning.
According to a Portage Co. Sheriff’s Department news release, at approximately 3:52 a.m., law enforcement responded to a one-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Highway 54 and Old Amish Rd. in the town of Buena Vista.
An SUV traveling west left the roadway and struck a stop sign at the intersection. As a result, the vehicle continued across the highway and entered the south ditch, overturning in the process, but coming to a final rest on its tires. During the crash, the SUV hit a utility pole guy wire, causing it to snap in half, resulting in power lines falling across the highway. Several other poles were also damaged during the incident.
According to reports, the driver was a 39-year-old Wisconsin Rapids man, who was cited for multiple traffic violations. He was treated for non-life threatening injuries. According to the Sheriff’s office, alcohol and speed appear to be contributing factors in the crash.
State Highway 54 was closed at County Highway BB for a short period of time to allow for the repair of the downed power lines, and Wisconsin Public Service remains on scene for further power restoration.
