Stevens Point Curling Club Takes Home Badger Junior Curling Championship

WAUSAU –Members of the Stevens Point Curling Club have taken home the gold over the holiday weekend in the Badger Junior Curling Championship from Dec. 27-29.
Team Viau comprised of three Stevens Point area youth competed to qualify for U18 Junior Curling Nationals in Bemidji, Minn. in late February. Team members were Skip-Suzanna Viau, third – Rachel Kawleski, second – Ashton Osterhaus (Pardeeville Curling Club), Lead-Elizabeth Rubenzer, and were coached by-Chris Viau and Lori Kawleski.
The three members of the Stevens Point Curling Club are currently High school seniors and have been curling together for over 7 years, competing in bonspiels throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota including Wisconsin State High School Championship last year.
The team finished the Badger Junior Championship with a 5-1 record and earning the title Badger Junior Girls Champions and will be representing Wisconsin as Team Wisconsin 1 at U18 Junior Nationals. For Suzanna Viau and Rachel Kawleski this is a repeat performance as champs as their team also were Badger Junior Champs in 2017.
Viau and Kawleski have also qualified to participate in the U21 Junior Nationals in Detroit, MI on January 27-February 3. Viau will be curling with Team McMakin and Kawleski will be competing with Team Normandeau. This is the top Junior Event in the United States and the winner from the 10 teams competing will advance to play in Scotland at the Junior World Curling Championships.
