Amherst girls basketball built for another run

After coming up short of a trip to state last year, the Amherst High School girls basketball team will look to make another deep run this season.

The fourth-ranked Falcons returned four starters and seven of their top nine players from last year’s team that finished 24-2 and reached the WIAA Division 3 Sectional Finals.

Reigning back-to-back Central Wisconsin Conference-8 (CWC-8) Champion Amherst has already won a pair of key conference matchups on the road this season on the way to an 12-1 start overall, and will look to remain unbeaten in the conference when it hosts Weyauwega-Fremont at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12.

“The season’s been going good,” said Amherst girls basketball head coach Gregg Jensen. “We have seven girls returning that had a lot of playing time, and we’ve got a couple more that we want to bring along gradually that don’t have a lot of experience, but are getting some time here and there.

“We’ve had some sickness and we’ve had some injuries, and other people have come through,” he said.
