Pointers blow out third-ranked River Falls, host Eau Claire Saturday

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) men’s basketball team overcame a slow start to roll to a 73-48 victory at third-ranked UW-River Falls (10-2, 1-1) in its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener Wednesday, Jan. 3, and followed with a road win at UW-Stout (6-7, 0-2) to start 2-0 in the conference.
The Pointers (8-5, 2-0) were set to host UW-La Crosse (9-4, 1-1) Wednesday, Jan. 10, and will be at home again for Alumni Day to take on UW-Eau Claire (8-5, 0-2) at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, before they travel to face fifth-ranked UW-Whitewater (11-2, 1-1) at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17.
“It’s a great feeling, and we should really take a minute to enjoy that and be very proud of that start on the road,” said UWSP men’s basketball head coach Bob Semling. “I think our guys looked at it as an opportunity to go in there and hit the reset button to clean the slate and say, ‘OK, this is a fresh start now in conference play,’ and I thought they did a great job of that.
“But all of that has to be put behind us now, you don’t have time in this league to sit back and enjoy what you accomplished, it’s such an incredibly difficult and challenging league, and you have to be good at immediately getting back to the task at hand and what matters,” he said. “And that is we’ve got two very good opponents coming into Quandt Gym.”
