WIAC leader UWSP set to host Platteville, visit Oshkosh
By John Kemmeter
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) men’s basketball team will look to remain at the top of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) standings when it takes on UW-Platteville (13-2, 3-1) at 7 p.m. at Bennett Court at Quandt Fieldhouse Saturday, Jan. 20, and travels to play at sixth-ranked UW-Oshkosh (13-2, 3-1) at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24.
The Pointers (10-5, 4-0) won a pair of games over UW-La Crosse (9-6, 1-3) and UW-Eau Claire (8-7, 0-4) last week to take sole possession of first place in the WIAC, and were set to play at second-ranked UW-Whitewater (13-2, 3-1) Wednesday, Jan. 17, in the first of three consecutive games against teams that entered this week tied for second place in the conference.
“We have Whitewater on the road, we have Platteville at home and then we have Oshkosh on the road, and those are all teams that are right on our heels,” said UWSP men’s basketball head coach Bob Semling. “We have an opportunity to put some distance between us, perhaps two games between us and them, and they’re trying very hard to bring us back and trying to even up the conference race, so that there are no undefeated teams.
“But it’s really important for us to finish this first round strong and try to build momentum going into the second round,” he said.
