Obituary: Robert Granum, 86
Robert “Bob” L. Granum, age 86, of Plover, died January 25, 2018 after a brief stay at The Lodge at Whispering Pines.
Bob was born April 3, 1931 to the late Norman & Hazel (Volla) Granum in La Crosse, WI. He attended schools in Holmen and graduated from Holmen High School in 1949. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture at UW-River Falls in 1953.
Bob met the love of his life, Birdie, while attending UW-River Falls. They married on March 21, 1953.
He was employed by UW-Extension Service as a 4-H Club Agent in Chippewa County from 1954-1962. He took over his family Dairy Farm in La Crosse County and because of his exceptional farming skills, he was selected as Outstanding Young Farmer for 1966. He also hosted one of the La Crosse CountyDairy Tours. In 1972, he “retired” from Dairy farming and became employed by the US Department of Agriculture. As a County Executive Director of Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS). He served in Marinette County until 1975 before transferring to Portage County where he retired in 1992. While working in both Marinette and Portage County, Bob was also a small farm operator for several years.
Bob was a lifelong member of the Lions Club, joining the Lions Club International in 1954. He was an active Lions member in each of the communities he lived until 2 years ago when his health no longer allowed him to stay active. He was a loyal member until his passing. He was honored in 2001 with a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. In his free time, he enjoyed boating, hunting, fishing, golfing, bowling, and gardening. He was always a steward of the land. He also was an avid Packer and Badger fan.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Birdie, of Plover; 5 children, Tom (Sally) of Holmen, Kay (Don) Felmer of Plover, Steven (Deb) of Galesville, Sandy Lee of Stevens Point, and David (Penny) of Stevens Point; grandchildren, Melissa, Jason, Garret, Jordan, Ashley, Marissa, Nathan, Dustin, Derek, Jason, Josh, Alisha, Amanda, Justin and Brandon; and 11 great-grandchildren. He is further survived by brother, Richard and brother-in-law, Phillip (Karin) Lysdahl;
In addition to parents, he was preceded in death by sons, Gerald and Joel; granddaughter, Shara Granum; sister-in-law, Audrey Granum; daughter-in-law, Kathy Granum.
The family would like to thank the nurses and therapists at the Atrium Care Center, The Lodge at Whisphering Pines, and the nurses and staff at St. Michaels Hospital for the wonderful care that was given to Bob.
