By John Kemmeter
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) men’s basketball team enters the final week of the regular season with a chance to win the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Title.
The 19th-ranked Pointers (16-7, 10-2) dropped a 56-47 decision at sixth-ranked UW-Platteville (20-3, 10-2) Wednesday, Feb. 7, to fall into a first-place tie with Platteville atop the conference standings, before they bounced back with an 80-63 win at home over UW-Stout (8-15, 2-10) Saturday, Feb. 10.
UWSP was set to square off with 14th-ranked UW-Oshkosh (18-5, 8-4) at Bennett Court at Quandt Fieldhouse Wednesday, Feb. 14, and will close out the regular season at UW-Eau Claire (11-12, 3-9) at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, before an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament will be on the line at the WIAC Tournament next week.
“This is a great place to be,” said UWSP men’s basketball head coach Bob Semling. “We control our own destiny, and we’re 80 good minutes away from at least claiming a share of a Regular Season Banner.”
