Stevens Point Area Senior High School (SPASH) junior Chad Franz and sophomore Drew Harris both qualified for a pair of individual events, and will also compete on a pair of relay teams, at the WIAA Division 1 State Meet at the University of Wisconsin (UW) Natatorium in Madison Saturday, Feb. 20.

Sophomore Drew Harris, junior Koppa’ny Bodor, junior Chad Franz, sophomore Marco Kurzynski and junior captain Jared Kort (alternate) are heading to the WIAA Division 1 State Meet in Madison this weekend.

Harris won two individual events and Franz added a first- and third-place finish at the Wisconsin Rapids Sectional at UW-Stevens Point Saturday, Feb. 10, while they also teamed up with junior Koppa’ny Bodor and sophomore Marco Kurzynski in a pair of relay events that also advanced to state.

“Toward the end of the season, we came together as a group and definitely finished out the season very strong,” said Harris. “Everybody dropped time and swam well and had fun.”

“First thing first, we wanted to get two relays down, because relays are when you get the numbers, and you get guys that may not qualify individually down there competing,” said first-year SPASH boys swimming head coach Courtney McMurrain. “And then any time you qualify individually for state it’s a big deal, because it’s difficult.

“You get one chance, at one meet, in one swim, and it is all dependent on what other people swim,” she said. “And so individually, the fact that we had two guys qualify in both of their events is pretty awesome.”
