Portage Co. Sheriff Release: Sexually Violent Offender Community Notification Meeting
For the City Times
STEVENS POINT — In accordance with Wisconsin State Statute 301.46(2m), there will be a public community notification meeting to share information about Ronald A Stewart. On November 27, 2000, Mr. Stewart was committed under chapter 980 of the Wisconsin State Statute, the State’s sexually violent persons law.
On Oct. 11, 2016, the Court ordered a supervised release plan be developed for Mr. Stewart. A hearing was held and the Court approved the supervised release plan on Feb. 13, 2018. On or before March 15, 2018, Mr. Stewart will be released to Community Supervision administered by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections and the Wisconsin Department of Family Services. This meeting is not intended to increase fear; rather, it is our belief that an informed public is a safer public.
On March 7, 2018, a community notification meeting will be held at the Town of Lanark Town Hall, 7174 County Road TT, at 7:00 PM to discuss Mr. Stewart’ release. There will be a presentation which will include representatives from the Portage County Sheriff’s Office, Portage County District Attorney’s Office, Wisconsin Department of Corrections, Wisconsin Department of Family Services, and the Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry Program.
Sex offenders have always lived in our communities; but is was not until the Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry and Community Notification Law was enacted that law enforcement was able to share this information with the community. Citizen abuse of this information to threaten, intimidate, or harass registered sex offenders will not be tolerated.
This next week, Mr. Stewart will be released to the Town of Lanark in Portage County, and reside at 9001 Boelter Lake Drive. He will be on Intensive Supervision, and will be subject to the Wisconsin Department of Corrections’ electronic monitoring program and global positioning system. Mr. Stewart will be required to register with the Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry Program for life. The Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry can be located at www.widocoffenders.org. Portage County was not Mr. Stewart’s home county during either of his offenses.
During one offense, Mr. Stewart forced his way into a residence of an adult female with whom he was known to, laid on top of the female, put hands around her neck, and attempted to sexually assault the woman, but she was able to get away. In another conviction, the offender was staying at an acquaintance’s residence, and sexually assaulted the acquaintances’ two female children, ages six and nine years old.
