Villnow second at state following overtime loss
By John Kemmeter
Amherst High School senior Max Villnow closed his high school wrestling career with a second-place finish at the WIAA Division 3 State Tournament Saturday, Feb. 24.
Top-ranked Villnow continued his season-long run into the WIAA Division 3 State Championship Match at 285 pounds, where he rallied from a third-period deficit to force Sudden Victory Overtime-1, before he suffered a 4-2 loss to third-ranked senior Tanner Weber of Markesan (44-0) at the Kohl Center in Madison to finish 44-2 this season.
“I came close to what I wanted to be, but it just didn’t happen,” said Villnow. “But I put in a lot of work and did what I could.”
“Max wrestled his best, he had a great match and he came up a little short,” said Amherst wrestling head coach Charlie Wanty. “And that’s wrestling for you.”
