Pointers look for Final Four berth at Platteville this weekend

The University of Wisconsin Stevens Point (UWSP) men’s basketball team will look to earn a trip to the Final Four, as it competes at the NCAA Division III Tournament at Platteville this weekend.

Senior guard MJ Delmore (3) and the 17th-ranked UWSP men’’s basketball team will square off with top-ranked Whitman (Wash.) in the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 at Platteville Friday, March 9.

The 17th-ranked Pointers (21-8) will face top-ranked Whitman (Wash.) (28-1) in the Sweet 16 at Platteville at 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 9, with the winner to play either eighth-ranked UW-Platteville (24-4) or Nebraska Wesleyan (26-3) in the Elite Eight at Platteville at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 10.

“It’s a great pod,” said UWSP men’s basketball head coach Bob Semling. “You have the No. 1-ranked team in the country in Whitman, and Platteville has really taken it to another level since about the time they got into the second round of the WIAC.

“Nebraska Wesleyan is a team that a lot of us don’t know much about, but there was an Elite Eight game in 1997 between Stevens Point and Wesleyan, and they won a hard-fought, two-point game,” he said. “There are a lot of connections and a lot of irony.”
