City proposes voluntary rental inspection program

By Gene Kemmeter
Stevens Point is working with the Central Wisconsin Apartment Association (CWAA) to develop a voluntary rental inspection program to provide piece of mind to renters about the conditions and safety of rental property.
Mark Kordus, neighborhood improvement coordinator for the Stevens Point Community Development Department, said the city officials, CWAA members and the Student Government Association (SGA) at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) have been meeting for several months to develop a voluntary program.
He presented the proposal to the Public Protection Committee Monday, March 12, and the committee recommended moving forward with the idea.
Kordus said the SGA, UWSP, CWAA and parents are asking for some kind of inspection program to make sure rental properties are safe and in good condition. UWSP used to have a program of approved off-campus housing but it became difficult for university officials to maintain inspections, leading to more instances of run-down housing.
