Skeet shooting comment causes concern at SPASH
An 18-year-old male student at Stevens Point Area Senior High School (SPASH) could be charged with a criminal charge of disorderly conduct after his comment about skeet shooting caused distress at the school.
The Stevens Point Police Department and Stevens Point Area Public School District personnel received a report of a racially-charged statement, including reference of “shooting” taking place, Thursday, March 8, at the high school.
Follow-up investigation identified the statement was referencing skeet shooting, and it was determined no immediate danger existed for students or staff.
Based on the investigation by law enforcement personnel, a criminal charge of disorderly conduct was submitted for the Portage County District Attorney to review based on the inappropriateness and reckless statement made by the man; his statement created a safety concern for those involved.
The Stevens Point Police Department did not comment on the specific disciplinary actions of the School District related to this incident. The district has policies in place to handle safety-related issues; disciplinary action in the past has ranged up to expulsion.
No new information was provided by press time Wednesday, March 13.
