Willett Arena will get new refrigeration equipment, update
By Gene Kemmeter
K.B. Willett Ice Arena will get a much-needed mechanical and interior overhaul in 2019.
The Stevens Point Finance Committee recommended Monday, March 12, that a $1.7 million project be added to the 2019 Capital Improvement budget to replace the entire refrigeration system that has been in the building since it opened in 1981.
Tom Schrader, city parks, recreation and forestry director, said the system, which was used equipment at the time it was installed, is failing and the R-22 refrigerant is being phased out starting Jan. 1, 2020.
