STEVENS POINT – On Monday, April 2, Mayor Mike Wiza will join thousands of city and county leaders across the country in a day of recognition to highlight the positive impact of AmeriCorps and Senior Corps in Portage County. Wiza will participate in National Service Recognition Day by meeting with local AmeriCorps and Senior Corps volunteers.

The nation’s local leaders are increasingly turning to national service and volunteerism as a cost-effective strategy to address local challenges at a time of fiscal constraint. More than 325,000 AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps volunteers serve in the United States, providing vital support to local residents.

At least 10 AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps Volunteers are currently serving in Portage County. This event will recognize those from Central Rivers Farmshed, The Aging and Disability Resource Center, YMCA Farm to School, the Midwest Renewable Energy Association, and the Wisconsin Woodland Owners Association.

National Service Recognition Day activities in Stevens Point are part of a national bipartisan effort to recognize the positive impact of national service, thank those who serve, and to encourage citizens to give back.
