STEVENS POINT — The Central Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra Program will present its annual spring concert Sunday, April 15, at 4 p.m. in the Stevens Point Area Senior High School (SPASH) auditorium.

The program includes two performance groups, a Philharmonia and Youth Symphony, with more than 100 young musicians from central Wisconsin. They meet weekly for 10 weeks each semester and receive additional mentoring from UW-Stevens Point Music Department student section coaches, and participate in music faculty master classes.

The Philharmonia will perform Slavonic Dance No. 8 by Antonin Dvorak and Brandenburg Sinfonia (Abridged) by J. S. Bach, both arranged by Merle Isaac; Adagietto (from Symphony No. 5) by Gustav Mahler, arranged by Carrie Lane Gruselle; and Symphony No. 5 (Movements I and IV) by Ludwig van Beethoven, arranged by Vernon Leidig.

The Philharmonia is directed by Stephan Wucherer, a cellist, composer, arranger and conductor in the Fox Valley and central Wisconsin and orchestra director at Lineville Intermediate School in the Howard-Suamico School District.

The Youth Symphony will perform William Tell Overture by Gioacchino Rossini, and Pines of Rome by Ottorino Respighi. The symphony is directed by Kurt Van Tiem, founding music director of the youth symphony program. He has conducted the Wausau Symphony, University of Massachusetts Wind Ensemble and at the New England Music Camp. Van Tiem is chair of the Music Department at P. J. Jacobs Junior High School, Stevens Point.

Tickets will be sold only at the door, beginning at 3 p.m. April 15. Admission is $3 per person or $10 for families of four or more. Cash or checks made to UWSP Continuing Education/CWYSOP are accepted.

The Central Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra Program is a partnership with the UW-Stevens Point Music Department and Continuing Education, Aber Suzuki Center, Heid Music and music educators in central Wisconsin.
