STEVENS POINT — The Latin American/Caribbean Speaker Series at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will host accomplished producer and documentarian Raúl Galván at 6:30 p.m., Monday, April 16, in the Dreyfus University Center Theater. The event is free and open to the public.

A native of Cuba, Galván came to the United States as part of Operation Pedro Pan, the flight of some 14,000 unaccompanied minors at the height of U.S.-Cuba tensions in the early 1960s. Moving to the Milwaukee area in 1975, he soon became a prominent leader of the Latino community there and statewide. Galván has been part of the broadcast industry for nearly 30 years and is now manager of program production at Milwaukee PBS. He has taught courses in media production, Latin American media history and portrayals of Latinos in the U.S. cinema.

In his presentation, Galván will use photos and video clips highlighting the previous ‘invisibility’ of Wisconsin’s Latino community while exploring how the current political situation has brought them greater attention statewide. In addition, he will focus on the contributions of Latinos in the arts and in media, drawing from his experience in both.

UW-Stevens Point’s interdisciplinary Latin American/Caribbean Speaker Series began in 2011 to promote awareness of political, social, economic, environmental and cultural issues in Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean.
