Susan Sparks Griffith, 78, Stevens Point, died Wednesday, April 11, 2018, at her home. She was under the care of Ascension Hospice.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 26, at Fairmount Avenue United Methodist Church in St. Paul, Minn. Interment will be at the Guardian Angel Cemetery in Stevens Point in the afternoon of May 26.

Boston Funeral Home assisted with arrangements. Condolences may be offered online at www.bostonfuneralhome.net.

Mrs. Griffith was born in 1939 in Springfield, Mo., a daughter of the late Leonard A. and Jewell (Thomas) Sparks. She graduated from Northwest Classen High School in Oklahoma City, Okla.

She continued her education at the University of Oklahoma (UO) where she was awarded one of the first scholarships OU ever gave to a woman and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in French in 1961. At OU, she was active and held leadership positions in Chi Omega sorority and French Club and was named Big Woman on Campus.

She was married to Verne Griffith June 20, 1962, at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City.

Early in their marriage, she taught high school French and also authored and taught a French program for 3-8 year olds entitled “Magic Time.” Later, she served as a translator of legal French for businesses.

She first joined the volunteer organization, The Junior League, in 1971 and has been a Sustaining member in five different Leagues over the years. Through the Junior League, she was instrumental in establishing a clinic specializing in physical therapy for multiple sclerosis patients and in creating and facilitating a short course on long-range planning, goals and objectives offered to civic organizations around the country.

In most of the communities in which she lived, she participated in La Liaison Francaise, book clubs, bridge clubs and the local Opera Guild. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church – most recently, Fairmount Avenue United Methodist Church in St. Paul, Minn., – and a long-time choir soprano.

Survivors include her husband, Verne E. Griffith, Stevens Point; two children, Dodd (Misty), Concord, N.H.; and Julie (Chris) Meadows, Stevens Point; and six grandchildren, Cecilia, Susan and William Griffith, and Jessi, Nathaniel and Franklin Meadows.
