The Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra (CWSO), under the direction of Patrick Miles, will present the fourth and final concert of the season at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21, and 4 p.m. Sunday, April 22.

“Made in America,” will feature Jeannie Hill, professor of Dance at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP), who will be performing Morton Gould’s “Tap Dance Concerto.” Premiered in 1952 by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and dancer Danny Daniels, the concerto was a step outside of the normal realm of orchestra soloists. The revolutionary work has proven time and again that tap dancing and ‘serious’ composition work well together. Hill produced the Point Tap Festival for six summers, bringing master teachers from across the country to teach and perform.

The concert will open with Samuel Barber’s “Medea’s Meditation and Dance of Vengeance” and will also include “Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo,” by Aaron Copland. George Gershwin composed “An American in Paris” as a thank you to his hosts in France. The CWSO will close the season with this much-loved composition, evoking the sights and sounds of the 1920-era city.

The winner of the Mark Brueggeman oil painting, “Promenade,” created and finished following the February 2018 concerts will be announced. Bids for the vibrant depiction of Modest Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” will be accepted until April 20 by e-mail, telephone or in person.

The painting is on display at the Smith Scarabocchio Art Museum, 800 Main St., Stevens Point. Hours of operation for the museum are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The CWSO is thrilled to announce the line-up of favorites for the 2018-19 70th anniversary season at the April concerts. Season subscriptions will be available at the concerts.

All performances will be held at Sentry Theater in the Sentry Insurance Complex, 1800 Northpoint Drive, Stevens Point.
