William J. Chorney, 93, a retired Sentry Insurance executive, died of natural causes Sunday, April 15, 2018, at North Haven Memory Care in Stevens Point.

A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, April 20, at Boston Funeral Home. Interment will be in Guardian Angel Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5 p.m. Friday until the service.

Mr. Chorney was born March 29, 1925, in Auburn, N.Y., a son of Ukrainian immigrants, John and Tilly. He was president of his senior class.

He served in the U.S. Army in Europe in World War II and received a Purple Heart for injuries he suffered on the battlefield.

Upon his return from the war, he attended Georgetown University on the GI Bill. He graduated in three years, then took a job with the U.S. Department of Labor for six years.

He then shifted careers, accepting an underwriting position with Sentry Insurance.

He was married to Marion McClatchey in 1955. She died in 2017 after 61 years of marriage.

His work at Sentry took them from New York to Illinois, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Louisiana and finally back to Stevens Point, where he retired from his vice president position in 1987.

In retirement, he volunteered for many years as a tutor at Washington Elementary School in Stevens Point.

Survivors include two children, Marilynn (Mark) Walker and Tom (Doneta) Chorney; six grandchildren, Kelly (Dan) Springer, Kerstin (Scott) Vest, Lindsey (Jake) Gotta, Tilly Chorney, Shelby Chorney and Bailey Chorney; five great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Bo and Joe Chorney; one son, Jim Chorney; and one grandson.
