Central Wisconsin Racing Association announces ‘Stars to Legends’ Schedule

The Central Wisconsin Racing Association (CWRA) will present eight race events at four different paved oval short tracks during the 2018 season. The events will feature a total of 16 main events and again be themed as the “Stars to Legends Tour,” in honor of past Champions and the new, star racers of today.

The opening event will be the Albert Getzloff Memorial race at Golden Sands Speedway in Plover Friday May 18. As part of the night’s schedule, two Feature events will be held, honoring the longtime racing-tire distributor for the CWRA.

The tour will then move to Marshfield Motor Speedway in Marshfield for the Jim Back Memorial Race Saturday, May 26, in honor of the longtime CWRA member who was an extremely popular racer dating back to the early 1960s and into the 1980s.

Stop No. 3 on the Tour is Saturday, June 16, at Dells Raceway Park in Wisconsin Dells for the Lyle Nabbefeldt Memorial, twin 55-lap Super Late Model event. Nabbefeldt was one of the true pioneers of the short track scene in Wisconsin, and the number he most often used in his racing career was 55.

The tour will be back at Marshfield Motor Speedway on Friday, July 6, for another two-Feature race format event.

Saturday, July 21, brings the Stars to Legends tour back to Dells Raceway Park for the Marlin Walbeck Classic. Walbeck, a prolific winner in the 1950s and 1960s, set the bar high for future stars of the CWRA, winning race after race while competing up to six times a week on both dirt and paved speedways in Wisconsin. Walbeck drove Chevrolet products for the bulk of his career in the No. 30 race car, and the two 30-lap Feature events on that night will be held in his honor.

Golden Sands Speedway will host its second CWRA race of the campaign Friday, Aug. 10, while a new track added to the schedule for 2018 is the Tomah-Sparta Speedway in Tomah.

The Tomah track saw many of the stars of the day race there, with none bigger than Dick Trickle, who the race Sunday, Sept. 16, will honor. A multi-main event format will be featured, with numerous side attractions included during the race program in honor of the short-track legend.

Marshfield Motor Speedway rounds out the CWRA Stars to Legends schedule for the season Friday, September 28, as part of the Annual Shootout at the track.

Full fields of Super Late Model-type race cars are expected to compete throughout the season, with 2017 Stars to Legends tour Champion, Frank Nitzke of Berlin returning to defend his crown.

Drivers attempting to unseat Nitzke for the Championship include the 2017 points runner-up and winner of two main events, Jeff Weinfurter of Wisconsin Rapids, as well as third-place finisher Jake Capek of Nekoosa, fourth-place finisher Derrick Van Dreel of Stevens Point, and fifth-place finisher Mark Mackesy of Wausau, along with the first female ever to win a CWRA Stars to Legends tour Feature event, Rachel Kallas of Winneconne.

Numerous new drivers to CWRA racing include Darren Jackson of Wisconsin Rapids, while Kirby Kurth of Wisconsin Rapids will compete on a regular basis.
