STEVENS POINT — City council members took a major step towards adding the city’s first roundabout on Monday night.

This move will see construction start in June on the intersection between Northpoint Dr. and Division St. for the creation of a roundabout. This project was awarded to American Asphalt of Wisconsin in the amount not to exceed $2,233,340.85. Construction on the roundabout is expected to last all summer, with some closures on entrance and exit ramps will be expected.

“The bids were a little bit higher than we were anticipating, but underneath the original estimates in the budgeting phase.” said Stevens Point Public Works Director Scott Beduhn.

The second project will see the rebuilding of Isadore St. in the amount not to exceed $2,901,869.67, awarded to James Peterson Sons, Inc. out of Medford, Wis.

The Isadore project will see road foundations rebuilt, utility work, an upgrade to existing sidewalks, and new asphalt. Construction, much like the roundabout on Northpoint, has an expected start date of early June, after the annual Special Olympics held at UWSP.

“The goal is to start the projects as soon as school lets out, and be completed, hopefully, as soon as school gets back in.” said Mayor Mike Wiza regarding the construction schedule.

Alders voted unanimously in favor of the roundabout project at Northpoint Dr. In regards to the Isadore project, alders voted 7-3 to move forward, with Jennings, Nebel and Johnson voting against.
