Phillip “Phil” Galloway

Phillip Otis Galloway, 89, passed away Monday, April 30th at St Michael’s Hospital in Stevens Point, WI. He was born June 17, 1928 to Harry and Laura (Newby) Galloway in Stevens Point.

Phil grew up in rural Stevens Point. He attended local schools and at a very early age began working to help support his family. He left home and embarked aboard the Merchant Marine vessel, J. F. Schoellkopf JR. and traversed the great lakes. He left this job and proudly served in the US Army as part of the World War 2 reconstruction effort in Germany. Following his discharge he returned home where he met and married his wife of 50 years, Dolores Patoka, on April 10, 1950. He and Dolores moved to Milwaukee, WI for 7 years and then returned to their home town of Stevens Point in 1957. Phil then spent the majority of his working years as a member of the Teamsters Union, driving an 18 wheeler to support his family.

Phil loved nature and the outdoors.  It was there that he found his center. He enjoyed traveling to Montana and Wyoming where he hunted mule deer and antelope. At home he raised, trained and shoed horses and he passed that love and care of animals onto his 8 children. Thorough-out his life Phil enjoyed history, film, music, reading and food – Phil loved a good meal! J.  And he loved people. He loved good conversation over coffee. In his later years he loved visiting South Point Restaurant nearly every morning where he visited with friends and strangers alike. Most of all Phil loved and cared for his Family.

He is survived by his Brother George, his sisters, Florence, Rochelle and Ida. His children:  Calvin (Betty) Roxanne, Nancy (Chuck), Laurie (John), Peggy, Sue (Randy), Sheree and Phillip (Evelise). Grandchildren: Shaun, Tracy, Ranae, Ron, Renee, Ryan, Tara, Dan, Jeremy, Amanda, Dawn, Autumn, Travis, Trevor, Melissa, Megan, Demi, and Sydnei. Great grandkids: Autumn, Cierra, Chloe, Justin, Bryar, Jordyn, Jay, Kaylee, Zach, Sara, Sadie, Corinna, Abilene, Jaxon, Bentley, Taylin, Trenton, Bryanna, Caleb, Alexis, Deandre, Sophie, Grace, Javien, Aliana, Jamari, Imani, Stardajah, Drodyn and Logan. And carrying on his legacy even further his 2 great great grandchildren, Avala and Chevelle.

Besides his parents and wife Dolores, Phil was preceded in death by his three brothers, Robert (Mary), Lovell and Ron (Carol), one sister, Mabel (Neil) Himler, nephew George Jr. and niece Lisa. Also preceding his death was his son in-law Robert, his grandchildren David and Gary and his great grandchild Thor.  A celebration of life will be held on June 16 at Memories 2811 Plover Springs Dr. in Plover WI from 1 – 4 pm.
