Outstanding faculty and staff recognized at UW-Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT — Outstanding faculty and staff members were recently recognized at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for their work during the 2017-2018 academic year.

The Excellence in Teaching, Scholarship and Service Award was given to Jason D’Acchioli, professor of chemistry. A teacher-scholar, D’Acchioli uses new technology and research to inspire his students. He served the university’s Faculty Council and on many committees, volunteers for local chemistry outreach events and is a member of the American Chemical Society.

The winner of the Carolyn Rolfson Sargis Award was Cindy Marczak, an executive staff assistant in Business Affairs who also worked in Student Affairs and Grant Support Services during her 27 years at the university. She has served on several committees and gives her time and talents generously across campus.

Cindy Marczak, a member of University Staff who has worked at UW-Stevens Point for nearly 30 years, was recently honored with the Carolyn Rolfson Sargis Award for working behind the scenes at the university.

Those selected for the Excellence in Teaching Award include:

  • David Barry, assistant professor of sociology and social work, creates opportunities for his students online, in the community and through conferences.
  • Matthew Markham, associate professor of music, encourages his students to excel through voice competitions and opera performances.
  • Sarah Scripps, assistant professor of history and international studies, developed new courses and community partnerships to help her students reach their goals.
  • Justin Sipiorski, associate professor of biology, offers students a fun, hands-on learning atmosphere and mentors students in several academic clubs.
  • David Snyder, associate professor of chemistry, works closely with student researchers and developed new courses and lab strategies to help students succeed.

Recognized with the University Scholar Award were:

  • Michael Demchik, professor of forestry, provides insight and expertise to public and private foresters, the hazelnut industry and an endangered butterfly species.
  • Alek Toumi, professor of world languages and literatures, is an authority in Francophone literature and theater, especially the works of French author Albert Camus.

The University Service Award recipients were:

  • Patricia Holland, professor of music, has served in several administrative roles and on committees at the university and is active in several professional organizations.
  • Ken Menningen, professor of physics and astronomy, has led the Common Council as chair and served in numerous other committee and administrative roles.

The recipient of the Academic Staff Excellence Award was Anne Eckenrod, associate registrar with the Office of the Registrar. She took on the implementation of a new software program this year, leading her team by example as they took on the extra workload.

The Academic Staff Spirit of Community Service Award was given to Bill DeVita, Water and Environmental Lab manager for the College of Natural Resources. He provides educational and research experiences for students as well as water quality outreach programs for the public and is active in the Point Bock Run Board of Directors.

Several staff members were recognized for Outstanding Work Performance:

  • Sheila Bannister-Gross, a program associate for Continuing Education, took on extra roles to help with personnel changes within her unit.
  • Karin Hyler, an academic department associate in the Department of Sociology and Social Work and World Languages and Literatures, served two departments for two years, helping students and faculty alike.
  • Becky Konkol, a retail dining manager and nutrition specialist for Dining and Summer Conferences, helped students with special dietary needs, managed 175 student and full-time staff members and helped prepare for dining area renovations.
  • Rebecca Wisniewski, a library services assistant in the University Library, took on extra duties at the main Circulation Desk and through Interlibrary Loan over the past year.
