STEVENS POINT — When St. Vinnies Board President Joan Dorschner found scraps of a quilt thrown in the garbage, there was only one option in her mind– put the scraps back together.
“I don’t know who the creator (original quilter) is or was. What I know about quilters is that they begin each project with a complete creation in mind,” said Dorschner. “…I also know something catastrophic must have happened to this creator, because the project was donated to St. Vinnies in pieces.”
Dorschner often rescues and help re-create quilts from discarded scraps, and this time she had the help of others. Local women Jean Probst and Kathy Hartman also chipped in to complete the project.
“That’s what our mission is — to help. All of our proceeds here as a non-profit go back to Portage County.” said Dorschner.
The unknown, and now pieced together quilt is on display at St. Vinnies, 2124 Rice St. However, the quilt is not for sale, as it will be used for the St. Joseph’s Parish Picnic and Fundraiser from June 1-3.
“I hope it finds a home with someone who will appreciate the journey it has taken to reach them, and the many loving hands that have made its existence possible.”
