Pacelli girls track qualifies five, Pacelli boys send four to State Meet

The Pacelli Catholic High School boys and girls track teams will both have multiple participants at the WIAA Division 3 State Meet at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Friday and Saturday, June 1 and 2.

Senior Shannon Leary and junior Karah Kluck both earned trips to state as individuals for the Pacelli girls, which also qualified three relays teams for state at the WIAA Division 3 Sectional at Marathon Thursday, May 24.

Meanwhile, sophomore Luke Ferro advanced for the Pacelli boys, which will also send three relay teams to state this weekend.

At the Marathon Sectional, Kluck finished third in the triple jump and Leary was fourth in the 100 hurdles to qualify as individuals for the Pacelli girls.

The 4×400 relay team of junior Grace Engebretson, junior Grace Van Handel, senior Jenelle Higgins and senior Laura Mitch combined to finish second in 4:09.59, which is the fourth-seeded time in the state for Division 3 heading into this weekend, with Hilbert/Stockbridge (4:08.67) the top seed.

Freshman Sami Miller joined Mitch, Higgins and Van Handel to finish third in the 4×200 relay in 1:49.01, which is the fifth-seeded time in Division 3, with Marathon Sectional Champion Oshkosh Lourdes (148:09) the top seed.

The 4×800 relay team of Engebretson, Van Handel, freshman Maya Kunze and Higgins also finished second to qualify for state.

For the Pacelli boys, Ferro won the high jump at 6-03, which is the third-seeded mark in Division 3, behind a pair tied for the top spot at 6-04.

Junior Xander Schmitz, senior Hayden Jurgella, senior Andrew Blanker and senior Daniel Mitch teamed up at the Marathon Sectional to win the 4×200 relay in 1:33.14, which is the fourth-seeded time in the state behind top-seeded Cambridge (1:30.12).

Blanker, Jurgella, Daniel Mitch and Schmitz teamed up again and finished second in the 4×400 relay (3:27.16), as they were edged at the finish line by Edgar (3:26.8) and enter state seeded second in the event behind top-seeded Edgar.

The Pacelli boys qualified for state in their third relay event in the 4×100 relay, as Schmitz, Jurgella, junior Richard Zupan and Daniel Mitch finished fourth.

The boys finished seventh in the team standings with 33 points, while Wild Rose had 79.5 to win the Sectional Title over Rosholt (72).

The Pacelli girls totaled 38 points to place eighth in the team standings, as Three Lakes/Phelps had 66.5 to win the Sectional Title over Edgar (61.5) and Marathon (58).

The Division 3 State Meet is set to begin at 3 p.m. Friday, with the second day due to start with field events at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
