Cinema Spotlight: Ocean’s 8

Review by Claire Hoenecke
Ocean’s 8 is a sophisticated joyride that gives you everything you want and more.
Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean leads this powerhouse cast with brilliance. Her cons both big and small are so clever that you cannot help but smile at her absolute genius. Her chemistry with Cate Blanchett is electric making their interactions impossible to look away from. The rest of the female-led class is equally dazzling.
The plot itself is identical to other heist movies and at times predictable, but it is still clever and enjoyable. The writers keep the stakes high without bringing in unnecessary complications or violence. The film maintains its high-class dignity even if that means playing it safe at times. Ocean’s 8 is expertly directed and efficiently edited in a manner that elevates it from any other run-of-the-mill blockbuster. The film is a well-oiled machine that runs just as intended.
For all the excellence behind the scenes, the women leading it are by far the best part of this film. They are a dynamite force that proves that women in Hollywood are more than capable of carrying a blockbuster of this magnitude all by themselves.
Rating: 7/10
Oceans 8 is rated PG-13 for for language, drug use, and some suggestive content.
