Obituary: Dorothy Lucile Simonis

Dorothy Lucile Simonis, 95, passed away on Thursday,  June 14, 2018, at Riverview Lodge while under the care of Hospice. Dorothy was born September 8, 1922, in Knowlton, Wisconsin, the daughter of the late Theodore L. Sturm and Laura A. (Williams) Petrie Sturm Boris.

On April 18, 1942, she was united in marriage to Cyril Gregory Simonis at St. Stanislaus Church in Stevens Point.  Cyril preceded her in death on June28, 1998.  In 1952, Dorothy and Cyril built their home where she continued to live until 2014. Dorothy graduated from Lincoln Grade School (now the site of the Lincoln Senior Center) and from P. J. Jacobs Senior High School on June 11, 1941.  She was a stay at home mom to her six children until 1967 when she began working for Ace Food Service at Wisconsin State University-Stevens Point now University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point .

She had the honor of working at all three food service facilities (now two) and upon her retirement from Saga Foods in 1987 was the manager of the salad department. While the children were growing up, she was actively involved as a den mother for Boy Scouts and a Brownie and Girl Scout leader.  Starting in the 1970s, Dorothy devoted a great deal of her time to the Lions Club.  She was a charter member and first president of the Wisconsin River Lioness Club and also a member of the Stevens Point Evening Lions Club.  She served as District Governor’s wife while Cyril was District Governor.  In 1996 she served as cabinet secretary.  She was a member of the Plover VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Stevens Point Elks Club, and St. Stephen’s Altar Society.

She was also a member of the Golden Sands Senior Club where she enjoyed the weekly luncheons and card socials.  Dorothy also volunteered at Lincoln Senior Center Holly Shoppe, Wisconsin Veteran’s Home at King and was a hostess on Wednesdays in the dining area of the Lincoln Senior Center.  Dorothy was an avid golfer and member of Wisconsin River Golf Club where she won many trophies, until she suffered a hip injury.  She participated in many Channel 7 Invitationals.

She also enjoyed bowling, sewing, reading, painting and crocheting.  She was a collector of elephants, spoons, Avon and Jim Beam collector bottles, and golf score cards from the many golf courses in the United States and other countries she and Cyril travelled to.  Dorothy is survived by her sons Dennis (Phyllis) Simonis, Grand Haven, Michigan and Michael (Sharon) Simonis, Plover; her daughters Kathleen (Dana) Batchelder, Arizona and Lori Grusecki, Whiting and daughter in law Nancy Simonis, Thiensville.  She is also survived by the following grandchildren:  Gregory (Brenda) Simonis, Monona;  Brian (Rhonda) Simonis, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Jeffrey (Marci) Simonis, McFarland; Sarah (Adam) Zingsheim, Madison; Christopher (Kalynn) Simonis, Mount Vernon, Indiana;  Paul Simonis (Hilery Bochenek), Muskegon, Michigan; Jennifer Simonis, Ft. Pierce, Florida; Jason Klismith, Japan; Kelly (Frank) Mastromauro, Los Angeles,  California; Edward Grusecki  (Morgan Menting) , Green Bay and Elizabeth Grusecki  (Austin Schulfer),  Jacksonville, Florida.

Her step grandchildren:  Cathy Hass, Donald Ficht, Corey Ficht, Christine (Greg) Johnson,  Jennifer (Ryan) Neist , and Lori Batchelder ,  and many great grandchildren,  step great grandchildren and step great great grandchildren;   and her God children Andy Mosey, Robert Boris and Marty Simonis.She was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore Sturm and Laura (Williams) Petrie Sturm Boris; her step father, Peter Boris, Sr.; husband, Cyril; sons Jeffrey, Philip and Gregory; son in law Donald Grusecki,   step grandson, Jeffrey Batchelder; brother,  Irvin Sturm;  sisters Matilda Trebatoski  and Evelyn  Zdroik half brother, Peter Boris, Jr. and half sisters, Bertha Petrie ,  Marie Petrie,  Johanna McGown, Laura McGlennon and Angelina Martin. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, June 28, 2018 at St. Bronislava Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Guardian Angel Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 9:00 A.M. Thursday at the Church until the time for mass.
